Spruce Up & CLU apps are dead, Long Live AXIØM
The Past
It’s been 2 years since I launched by very first personal app, Spruce Up, for Apple Vision Pro. I didn’t even have the Apple Vision Pro hardware at that point!
In that time I’ve added over 450 additional items, and added support for iPhone & iPad. I enjoyed every second of working on it, and I learned a lot. However, there are a couple of aspects that have brought me to the decision that I will need to sunset it.
iPhone/iPad support got a lot of downloads but not a lot of use. I appreciate how easily Xcode and SwiftUI let me get a version for iPhone/iPad working with over 75% of my code reused, but it wasn’t as compelling as an experience as I hoped.
Unfortunately there is no way to delist a platform once you’ve released a build for it, so to go back to being an Apple Vision Pro specific app while maintaining the current user base is impossible.Leveraging some of the new visionOS 26 goodness around SwiftUI and Model3D would mean doing a lot of rework, and it’s likely easier to build it up from scratch and focus on visionOS 26 going forward (as every model of Apple Vision Pro supports it flawlessly).
I also launched a new app that I cheekily called CLU over the holidays. I’m enjoying that app but a jest-name isn’t a very sustainable one.
The Present
The latest update of Spruce Up, version 0.75, will be the last one, and is now no longer available for download to new users. The auto-renewing subscription has also been cancelled, and existing subscribers won’t be charged again.
The app will have all content unlocked for all existing users (even if they never paid), and will be available for the next 32 days to ensure everyone can get their money’s worth. After that you can keep the app your device and it will continue to function, but you won’t be able to redownload it from the App Store, nor will I be pushing compatibility updates.
The CLU app will remain as is, but will be rebranded in the coming 26.0 update.
The Future
I’ve been working on a new cross-media project, AXIØM, that I will be teasing soon, and I’m going to take the learnings from this project and build a brand-new visionOS 26 or later app that will allow for decorating specifically within it’s theme.
I’m also putting the first AXIØM app up for pre-order very soon!
